About Newcastle Upon Tyne

Newcastle takes it’s name from the the Roman fort and settlement upon which the castle (now known as the area of castle keep) was built. In 1080, a wooden castle which came to be referred to as “the new castle upon tyne” was built by William the Conqueror’s eldest son, Robert Curthose. The castle which remains today was built in stone in the 1170’s by Henry II.
