About Tynemouth

With a current population of around 17,056, Tynemouth is a historic borough, situated between North Shields and Cullercoats at the mouth of the River Tyne.

Well known for it’s award-winning beaches, historic buildings, Georgian Terraces and converted ship-owner’s houses, Tynemouth is historically rich and dates back to the Iron Age.

Beaches in Tynemouth are known for being slightly warmer than other North East areas due to east-facing positions adjacent to the North Sea. By the late 18th Century, sea-bathing became fashionable to local residents; King Edwards’s Bay,  Tynemouth Longsands and Prior’s Haven remains popular with locals to the the present day and are also excellent spots for days out, dog walking and other activities such as sailing and rowing.

In association with Blue Flag Beaches, Tynemouth Longsands was also voted one of the best beaches in the UK by the users of TripAdvisor in 2013 and 12th best in Europe. Offering great walks (for both dogs and humans!) , surfing, sight seeing, sand, rock dunes and cliffs – Longsands is a stunning beach enjoyed by families, visitors, photographers and painters. Longsands is easily accessible via Cullercoats Metro Station on the North side and Tynemouth Metro Station on the south.
